Mother Estranged from Child on Mother’s Day

This card was made for someone who is currently estranged from their mother and it’s Mother’s Day. Societally, we are taught all mothers are nurturing and selflessly care for their children. Unfortunately, this is not the relational dynamic between all mothers and their children. Some mothers may not have the capacity to “mother” their child well. This dysfunction in the relationship can become more potent as the child reaches adulthood, some to the point of estrangement. 

Days like Mother’s Day were created to celebrate mothers that mother well. Unfortunately, those that never had the mothering they desired and deserved can feel isolated when their reality isn’t what society says it should be. They mourn the loss silently and alone.

The cover is purple with a black heart stitched in the corner with the words, “Mother’s Day is complicated…”. The inside inscription says, “Celebrating Mother’s Day, while being estranged from your mother, can feel incredibly isolating. I’m sorry your mother can’t appreciate the incredible person you are. I see you. I choose you. Be gentle with yourself today.”

I hope that every person who receives this card will feel more seen, more connected, and less alone in their grief.
